Modeling Multi‐Fraction Coastal Aeolian Sediment Transport With Horizontal and Vertical Grain‐Size Variability
نویسندگان
چکیده
Grain size affects the rates of aeolian sediment transport on beaches. Sediment in coastal environments typically consists multiple grain-size fractions and exhibits spatiotemporal variations. Still, conceptual numerical models are simplified often only include a single fraction that is constant over model domain. It unclear to what extent this simplification valid if inclusion multi-fraction spatial variations simulations predictions dune development. This study applies AeoLiS compare single-fraction approaches for range distributions scenarios. The results show timescales days years, with median grain size, D50, give similar simulations, provided wind able mobilize all within time frame. On these timescales, vertical variability has limited effect total rates, but it does influence simulation minute timescales. Horizontal influences both downwind bed composition. provide new insights into beach composition toward dunes. findings can guide implementation models.

Connecting aeolian sediment transport with foredune development
Foredune volume is an important factor for coastal safety and depends on the balance between erosion through wave attack and sediment input via aeolian transport. Dune erosion can be simulated with good accuracy, but predictions of aeolian sediment transport into the foredunes are still difficult to make. As part of a larger project that aims to model foredune development over decades, the goal...
متن کاملWave Induced Mine Burial and Sediment Transport in Coastal Environment: Wave and Sediment Transport Modeling Studies
The long-term goal of this work is to develop numerical simulation techniques for predicting waveinduced sediment transport and bed evolution in the coastal zone (order 10 meter depth outside the surf zone), at horizontal scales of tens of meters or less, and the scouring/burial around objects/obstacles (mine-like), partially buried in the bottom. This research was initially motivated by the Na...
متن کاملAeolian Transport of Coarse Sediment in the Modern Martian Environment
Introduction: Evidence of aeolian sandstone outcrops, migrating sand dunes, and changes in surface albedo changes caused by redistribution of surface dust on Mars demonstrate that aeolian processes have been and continue to be a dominant agent of surface modification [3] [7] [9]. It is known that strong wind events on Mars can be responsible for lifting large amounts of sediment into the atmosp...
متن کاملAeolian sediment transport following wildfire in sagebrush steppe
Wind erosion of soil is an appreciable but unstudied event following fires in cold desert. We examined aeolian transport of sediment for 1 year following fire in semi-arid shrub steppe on loess soils in southern Idaho, USA. Sediment collectors were used to determine horizontal mass transport of soil and saltation sensors and anemometers were used to determine saltation activity (fraction of tim...
